Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day upon us, I thought it would be fun to talk to some moms and learn about their relationship with cannabis. I spoke with three amazing mothers, each in different chapters of their lives and journeys of motherhood.

With Mother’s Day upon us, I thought it would be fun to talk to some moms and learn about their relationship with cannabis. I spoke with three amazing mothers, each in different chapters of their lives and journeys of motherhood.  I was curious to know how each of them used cannabis, how their relationship with cannabis evolved as their children grew older, and whether or not they spoke about cannabis with their kids.

Name: May

Age: 28

How old are your kid(s)? 8

How do you incorporate cannabis into your life? It helps me eat, which is one of those things that I can forget to do for myself with school, work, and being a mom. But for me it’s really important to model good behaviour to my daughter. I want to show her that eating is important and it’s not ok to miss meals. So cannabis helps me with that making sure I don’t forget to feed myself!

Has it changed since having kids? I used to consume randomly to get creative. I would smoke it in a bong and not think about it much. But since having my daughter I’ve had to compartmentalize my use. I am much more specific about the strains and the amount of money that I spend on it. Thinking about something more elevating for the day and something with a more indica feel at night. I’ve had to educate myself as much as I could to understand how to use cannabis in the best way for me; what to consume and how to consume it.

Do you talk to your kid about cannabis? She understands that it’s medicine and it’s something that helps me. But we don’t talk about that stigma that surrounds it.

Name: Ann

Age: 55

How old are your kid(s)? 21, 26, 30, 32

How do you incorporate cannabis into your life? I use a dry herb vaporizer at night to help me sleep. Occasionally, me and my spouse will share a vape pen together on a Friday or Saturday evening.

Has it changed since having kids? How? Yes, because prior to having kids it was illegal. I had children very early, but before that when I was younger I only consumed it occasionally. I liked the smell of cannabis, but mostly smoked hash then. After having children I, very rarely, I could count on one hand, would share a joint again in very select company

Do you talk to your kid about cannabis? I don’t consume with them. But yes, I do talk to them about it, as a matter of fact, I had to convince my oldest child to let her hair down and explain to her that all people who used cannabis weren’t bad people when she was doing a debate in grade 9. She was so upset that she had to speak on the side of pro-marijuna legalization in front of her class. But with some convincing and education she understood that it really wasn’t bad. She actually went on to work in the cannabis industry much later in her life.

Name: Kathryn

Age:  35

How old are your kid(s)? Kai is 4

How do you incorporate cannabis into your life? I consume it (smoking it in joint form or vaping) in the evenings. I find it helpful for relaxation and stress relief.

Has it changed since having kids? Yes. I smoke less during the day than I used to. I stopped smoking after my first trimester and only started again once I stopped breastfeeding

Do you talk to your kid about cannabis? Not yet, he’s only four. But, I do intend to once he’s a bit older.

It was so interesting to get the different perspectives and insights from these three women. There was  one common thread though…Moms are using cannabis as a tool to help them relax and we all know how much they deserve to relax. So before grabbing your mom another bouquet of flowers, think about visiting your local cannabis retailer and get her a different kind of flower this Mother’s Day.
